DEMOCRAT-HERALD, MONDAY, AUG. 9, 1999 A9 MARKETS MUTUAL FUNDS Logging costs: Fight raises concerns Stocks at 2 p.m. NEW YORK (AP) Prices were modestly higher on Wall Street today as rising bond yields and political uncertainty in Russia kept investors from making many new commitments to stocks. At 2 p.m. on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 13.30 at 10,727.33.
Broader stock indicators posted slim gains. The Standard Poor's 500 index was up 3.12 at 1,303.41, and the Nasdaq composite index was up 6.46 at 2,554.43. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by an 11-to-9 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came 441.95 million shares, behind Friday's afternoon pace. The NYSE composite index was up 0.81 at 611.85, and the American Stock Exchange composite index was up 0.25 at 778.17. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 0.12 to 428.16.

Later in midday trading in New York, the euro traded at $1.0711. The British pound was quoted at $1.6024, down from $1.6152.
In midday trading in New York, the dollar bought 115.32 yen, and the pound was worth $1.6053. Isolated timber towns, however, continue to founder.
The national forests were created in 1891 as a reserve against cut-andrun logging, and were not heavily tapped until after World War II, when returning soldiers started building homes for the baby boom. Now all but 5 percent of the oldgrowth forests have been cut to produce everything from subway ties in OBITUARIES Jean A. Bonk June 2, 1930 Aug. 6, 1999 LEBANON Jean Adell Thompson Bonk, 69, of Lebanon died Friday at her home. She was born in Eugene to Dell and Clara (Bunn) Russell.
She lived in Cascadia until settling in Lebanon in 1935. She graduated from Lebanon High School in 1948. She attended business college in Portland for a Jean A. year, followed by Bonk a year of modeling school before returnLebanon. "She married Richard "Dick" Thompson on March 9, 1953, in Vancouver, Wash.
He died on June 4, 1992. She worked in her mother and stepfather's electrical business for several years prior to working 21 years for Willamette Industries. She retired as a senior clerk in purchasing in 1993. She married Eugene Bonk on May 14, 1994, in Lebanon. She was a member of St.
Edward's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America and had played the organ for the church and church choirs. She loved music and had sung in the church choir and the Lebanon Community Choir and also at weddings and funerals. She enjoyed traveling. She and her husband Eugene recently took a trip to Europe to research her family history. She loved her family and friends.
She was described as having a great sense of humor, a positive attitude and a wonderful smile. Survivors include her husband Eugene; daughters Pam Froemke of Canby and Karlee Dunmyer of Albany; son Russell Thompson of Lebanon; mother Clara McKean of Lebanon; stepmother Edith Russell of Lebanon; stepdaughters Maryellen Coccorese and Jennifer Bonk of Beaverton; stepsisters Gloria Vermeul of Astoria and Joy McPherson of Wikieup, Ariz; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her father and stepfather, Dean McKean, died earlier. Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Huston Jost Funeral Home.

One company that had two recent timber buys affected by Dwyer's injunction is Superior Lumber in Glendale, which relies on public timber for 50 percent of its log supply.
Superior Lumber weathered the cutbacks in national forest logging that closed hundreds of other mills by buying up private timberlands, installing high-tech milling equipment and traveling as much as 300 miles for logs. President Steve Swanson said he was frustrated to have two timber Grocery store, then was a patcher and Raiman machine operator at Champion Plywood for 25 years. After retirement, she traveled in every state and went several times to Alaska to visit her son. She also went to the South Seas, Japan, Mexico, Israel, Italy and elsewhere. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lebanon.
She enjoyed flowers, landscaping, cooking, genealogy, crocheting, old family photos, and her family. She married John W. Miller on April 4, 1930, in Fairbury. He survives. Other survivors include sons Ralph of Homer, and Joe of Heppner; nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Church in Lebanon with the Rev. Katherine Simmons Conolly officiating. Interment will be at Rock Hill Cemetery. Contributions to the church memorial fund may be sent to DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel at 815 N.W.
Buchanan Corvallis, Ore. 97330. Shirley Jean Hill Aug. 16, 1925 Aug. 6, 1999 CORVALLIS Shirley Jean Hill, 73, of Corvallis died Friday.
She was born in Independence, the daughter of Elmore Edwin and Anna Mae (Wentland) Hill. She attended elementary schools at Lincoln, Bush and Leslie and graduated from Salem High School in 1943. She attended Oregon State University and graduated from the University of Washington in 1947. A proofreader and editor for 39 years, Ms. Hill worked for Stars Stripes, an Armed Forces newspaper, in Germany and later for the Oregonian, the Oregon Journal, the Statesman-Journal and the Department of Printing for the State of Oregon.
She last worked for several years with the OSU Department of Publications until her retirement in 1987. Ms. Hill was a volunteer for the Corvallis City Library and was proud of an award presented to her from the city for the beautification of Corvallis. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church and to Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She enjoyed gardening and hisloved cats.
Surviving are sisters Kathryn Berger of Arleta, and Marilyn Chandler of Salem; nephews Michael Arnot of Arleta, Jeffrey Arnot of Salem, Bruce of Portland and Theodore L. Walker of Eugene, and five greatnephews and great-nieces. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Belcrest Memorial Gardens, Salem. Memorial services will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Swanson also said the forest plan's promise of a certain, if smaller, timber supply has never been met.
The protected species include rare salamanders, mushrooms, slugs, mosses, lichens, plants and the red tree vole, a favorite food of the spotted owl. A recent report from the General Accounting office found that the cost of preparing timber sales under the Northwest Forest Plan has nearly doubled, from $126 per thousand board feet in 1992 to $243 in 1997. She married Earl P. Keith on June 14, 1942, in Brownsville. After marriage, she lived in Bre.
merton, and then lived with her parents in Brownsville while her hus: band served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, they lived in Junction City, moving back in 1948 to Brownsville, where her husband owned an electrical business. The couple traveled extensively, seeing much of the United States. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and stayed home until Dec. 12, 1992, when she moved to Grand View Manor Nurse ing Home in Junction City.
She was a homemaker and worked for three years as a nurse's aide at the Mennonite Home. She was a member of the Brownsville Christian Church. She sang at weddings and funerals and in the church choir. She enjoyed helping housebound retirees and invalids, running a taxi service for groceries and doctor's appointments. She loved to play the piano and always played for her daughters and friends and for shut-ins.

Survivors include her husband William; daughters Terrie McCarrell, Christine Schmidt and Jennifer Schmidt; son David Schmidt, and one granddaughter, all of British Columbia; sisters Marjorie Reeder of Vanderhoof and Maxine Harward of Philomath; brothers Gerald Kropf.
