Hoffman, first administrator of the Marshall Plan, died at his home Tuesday at the age of 83. With him was his wife of 12 years, the former Anna Rosenberg, assistant secretary of defense from 1950 to 1953.
A successful businessman, Hoffman had devoted himself to public service from the World War II era onward. He started AP. Wirephoto Paul G. Hoffman as an automobile repairman and then a car salesman, and went on to become president and chairman of the board of the Studebaker Corp. A REPUBLICAN, he came under attack from his party's right, especially Sen.
Joseph McCarthy, during the 1950s. The public side of his career included service as organizer of wartime United China Relief; head of the Committee for Economic Development to plan postwar employment; head of the European economic recovery program, known as the Marshall Plan; president of the Ford Foundation; affiliate of the U. N. Development Program with which he spent his last working years since 1966.
