Ret. SMSGT. EVERETT KENNETH BROOKS, 84, of Jacksonville passed away quietly in his sleep on Thursday, Nov.
12. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, June Brown Brooks;
a son, Patrick Thomas Brooks;
two brothers,Thomas Brooks and PatrickBrooks; and a sister, Kathryn Brooks Greenwood.
He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Brooks Manning, of Agawam, Mass.; and eight children: Judith Ames of Macomb, Mich., Deborah Tello of Wolfforth, Texas, Cheryl Davis of Cabot, E. Brazelton Brooks of Calico Rock, Kathryn “Kat” Stivers of Jacksonville, Kenneth Brooks of Jacksonville, Betty Jo “BJ” Brooks of Cabot, William “Billy” Brooks of Ward; 26 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren. He also leaves behind his favorite nephew, Tim Greenwood, of Rochester, N.Y.; and his good friend, Bob Cover of Sherwood.
He was born on April 2, 1925, in Brushton, N.Y. Sgt. Brooks joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and trained as a waist gunner on the B-17. He flew in 31 bombing missions during WWII as a member of the 391st bomb squadron, 34th Bombardment Group, and served as a tail gunner. He was hit by a piece of shrapnel in one battle and was saved by his parachute’s D-ring. After serving 30 years in the Air Force, Sgt. Brooks retired at Little Rock Air Force Base in the summer of 1974. He then worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail handler for 14 years at the GMF in North Little Rock. He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard, working crossword puzzles, playing the harmonica, and rooting for his favorite National Hockey League team, the New York Rangers.

RICHARD “RICK” THOMAS HALINSKI JR., 57, passed awayon Nov. 14th, 2009, in Little Rock, Ark. He was born March 5th, 1952, in Chicago, Ill., to Florence Ciesla Halinski and the late Richard T. Halinski Sr.
Rick was an Eagle Scoutand a graduate of Catholic High School where he served as class president. Most notably, Rick was selected as an all-state football player during his junior year with the Catholic High Rockets Football squad. He attended the University of Arkansas and was a member of the Razorback football team and the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He went on to obtain his Jurist Doctorate from the University of Arkansas. After graduation, he worked at the State of Arkansas Insurance Division as Associate Counsel and in 1981 moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he was Chief Counsel and Managing Attorney for USAA, a full financial services company that proudly serves the United States military and their families.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Pearson Halinski; and four children: Patrick and wife Kate of San Antonio, Texas, Richard Ryan and Elizabeth Blair of St. Louis, Mo., and Eric Taylor of Columbia, Mo.; brothers, Dr. David Halinski and his wife Jolynda of Vicksburg, Miss., Robert Halinski of Little Rock, Ark.; sisters, Pamela Johnson and husband Randy of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Karen and husband Mike McGoogan of Russellville, Ark., Elizabeth and husband Jim Ovington of Grapevine, Texas; seven nieces and nephews.

FRANCES KAY HOLMES, 52, of Little Rock went into the arms of the Lord on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born on Sept. 30, 1957, in Pine Bluff, Ark., the daughter of Charles D. Calkins Jr. and the late Frances Knox Calkins.
She was preceded in death by her only son, Brandon Scott Hopper; her big brother, Charles David Calkins II; and her mother. She is survived by her husband of eight years, Jerrell L. Holmes; her daughter, Brooke Hopper Maness and husband Bradley of Conway; a granddaughter, Katherine Maness; and her grandson due in February; her father, Charlie Calkins; a brother, Pat Calkins of Fayetteville; a sister, Leigh Hannah of Jacksonville; and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.

MAY ALLER LINDSEY, 81, of Little Rock was born Nov. 1,1928, to the late Essie and Willie Medlock in Wattensaw, Ark. She attended public school in Carlisle, Ark. She was united in marriage to the late Labon Harshaw in 1947. To this union threechildren were born. One child, Calvin Harshaw, preceded her in death. She later married Harsin Lindsey, who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Lindsey passed away on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Arkansas Hospice Care, Little Rock.

BENTON - Katie Elizabeth (Nalley) McPherson, age 87, of Benton, died November 16, 2009. She wasborn on August 20, 1922 in Benton to the late Charlie and Daisy Nalley. She was a homemaker and a member of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church in Benton.
In addition to her parents,she was preceded in death by her husband of over sixty-two years, Eugene McPherson; two daughters-in-law, Phillis Ann McPherson and Janie McPherson; one greatgrandchild, Joseph Adam Perryman; two brothers and three sisters. Peggy retired from Commercial Union Insurance Company after 35 years. She was an active member of Womens Insurance Association.

FAYETTEVILLE - Joe Taylor, 61, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was taken from this world to be with our Lord on Monday, November 16, 2009, in Fayetteville. Born in Helena, Arkansas, on September 9, 1948, the oldest son of Mary Brown Taylor of Searcy, Arkansas, and the late JC Taylor originally from Rison, Arkansas. Joe grew up in Forrest City where he played football and baseball, enjoying the sports on into his college years. An Arkansas State University graduate, he earned degrees in Journalism and Business.While in college he served in the Arkansas National Guard along with one of his brothers and several hometown friends.
Joe farmed from 1972 until 1999 mostly in Jefferson County, being one of the first farmers in the county to replace cotton with rice and lease his fields for commercial duck hunting. Much of his farm career was spent on the Rob Roy Plantation. For the past five years he has driven across the country for Averritt Express. Joe’s adult life can be summed up as a faithful husband, father, and one who grew to love our Lord Jesus Christ above all things. He passed on to his three sons his love of hunting and to his only daughter, his love of horses. Through Joe’s sacrifices he made for his family, his children will remain planted in his faith and a life grounded in principles greater than one’s self. His wife and children look forward to the day when they will be re-united with him in Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Vassaur Taylor, who he married November 17, 1978, in Pine Bluff; his mother; children, Coleman Taylor of Fayetteville, Addison Taylor of Altheimer, Arkansas, Isabelle Taylor and Samuel Taylor of Fayetteville; brothers, Stevie Taylor of Wynne, Arkansas, and Rodger Taylor of Searcy.

FORDYCE - Francis Jane Hall Critz, 90, of Fordyce passed awayon Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Cabot Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. Formerly a resident of Little Rock, Jane was born to Clarence James Hall and Jane Bland Thomas Hall on July 15, 1919, in Texarkana, Texas. She spent her childhood in Fordyce where she was a Redbug cheerleader and beauty queen. After her graduation from Fordyce High School, she moved to Little Rock. She taughtdance at the Dorothy Donelson Dance Studio and worked at M.M. Cohn on Main Street in downtownLittle Rock.
She is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, John M. Critz; a grandson, John Joseph Critz; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Jordan; and her parents. After her marriage to Mr. Critz, she became a loving and devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her six children, Martin Critz (Sandra) of Fort Worth, Texas, Hall Critz, Jane Anne Smith (Douglas) and Rodgers Critz (Debbie) of Little Rock, Jerry Lu Wagnon (David) of Cabot and Jennifer Fisher (Dempsey) of Germantown, Tenn. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Jane had a wonderful gift of hospitality, opening the Critz home to many she knew and many whom she had never met. Bible Study Fellowship and Young Life had their Little Rock beginnings in the Critz home. Jane was a faithful member of First Christian Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Before entering the nursing facility, she attended Fellowship Bible Church. Countless lives have been touched and affected by Jane and her sweet Christian witness.
Her family, which now totals in the 80s, gathers at Thanksgiving for their annual reunion. The weekend includes a men’s golf tournament named the Granny Cup and a women’s walk named the Granny Walk in her honor.
Jane’s family wants to thank God for the wonderful example they all had for the unconditional love that she showed and her total commitment to Jesus Christ. She leavesa legacy of a huge, loving family that will miss her dearly. Her family wants to express their deepest appreciation and gratitude to the administration and staff of Cabot Nursing and Rehabilitation for the loving care she received while living there for seven years. FORT SMITH - Birnie Pryor, 73, of Fort Smith, Ark., died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, of complications due to pulmonary fibrosis. Birnie was a graduate of Fort Smith High School Class of ’54 and the University of Arkansas wherehe was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Birnie also completed the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Marketing Management Program.
Birnie had a passion for and dedication to the automotive after market industry where he devoted his entire working career, including 27 years with Mid America Industries and 21 years as owner of Pryor Marketing and Communications of Fort Smith. He received many honors and forged many friendships throughout his career.
Birnie was involved in many civic organizations including past St. Edward Mercy Foundation board member, past chairman of the Mercy Celebrity Classic, a C.B.I.D Commissioner and lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where he served as Junior Warden.Birnie was a talented woodworker and avid golfer, and his other hobbies included hunting, fishing and snow skiing. He loved the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Dallas Cowboys.

GILLETT - Ashel Lloyd Gordon, 67, of Gillett, Ark., was taken to hisheavenly home on Nov. 16, 2009. He was born Oct. 6, 1942, to Lloyd and Dorothy Jones Gordon, both preceding him in death. Ashel was know to get up early, walk three miles to town, go toseveral homes and personally see that their Arkansas Democrat-Gazette paper was right at their door, and return home to read his paper. This was his regular routine until Nov. 16th when his Lord and Savior called him home in an instant with a heart attack.

He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Henrietta Holzhauer Gordon; a daughter, Hollie Gordon (Chuck) Freemyer of Almyra, Ark.; a son, Tech Sgt. HELENA-WEST HELENA - James Clayton Johnston (Maj. Ret.), 89, of Helena, Ark., died Nov. 12, 2009, at Easton Memorial Hospital in Easton, Md. He will be buried with full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
During World War II, Johnston was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, and the Air Medal with Five Clusters, for 32 completed missions. Johnston also served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his 24 years of service, he flew 38 different aircraft. He was a flight instructor at Kisarazu Air Base, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Air Force Academy, and answered to “Whipsaw 3” when flying the wild blue yonder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Johnston; three brothers and one sister; and his wife of 50 years, Alma Ruth Bloesch Johnston. He is survived by two sisters, Lucille Tyler of Jacksonville, Ark., and Nova Patton of Searcy, Ark.; two children and their spouses, Jan and John Davis of Federalsburg, Md., and Jimmy and Sue Johnston of Benton, Ark.; five grandchildren, Wendy R. Anderson of Washington, D.C., Andrea Anderson Gluckman of Bethesda, Md., Jill Johnston and Kirsten Caldwell, both of Fayetteville, Ark., Clay Johnston of Benton, Ark.; and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Bloesch Gluckman of Bethesda, Md.

HOT SPRINGS - Harold Elson Estes, Lt. Col. (Ret.), age 88, left hisearthly bounds peacefully on Nov. 17, 2009, in Hot Springs, Ark., with his family by his side. Hal was born on July 7, 1921, in Baltimore, Md.
He graduated from Baltimore City College andproudly served his country during World War II in the First Infantry under General Patton. A Purple Heartrecipient, he was also awarded the Bronze Star for courage under fire and was credited with saving many American lives.
After retiring from the Army in 1968 in Austin, he began his civilian career with Glastron Boat Company as the company’s Training Officer. He continued his love of teaching at The University of Texas at Austin Industrial Education Department, where he wrote and taught numerous courses on interpersonal communication, supervisory management and teamwork for a decade. After retiring from U.T., he moved to Hot Springs. His Lake Hamilton home became a family gathering place, providing countless enduring memories for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Hal Estes is survived by his loving wife, Jo Anna; and his children, Debbie Herrington, Barbara Crawford, Mark Estes, Beverly Moon and Mike Estes and their families. His stepchildren, Billy Matthews and Karon Yates and their families also survive him.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hot Springs. Services will be officiated by Pastor John McCallum with music by Scott Reves of First Baptist Church, where Hal and Jo Anna were members. HOT SPRINGS - Mr. Gary Franklin Hall, age 61, passed awayat home in Hot Springs, Ark., on Nov. 14, 2009. A native of Little Rock, Ark., Gary was a graduate of Central High School in Little Rock.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, BillyKaren Hall; and his adopted sister, Jo Scheryl Summers; and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Marie Duncan Hall and Paul Guy Hall; and brother, Bill Hall. He loved his family and animals, especially his cats.
Gary never met a stranger he was personable and had a melodious voice. Gary was a musician and started the band “Romans.” He was a successful musician, in the ’60s with the band Merging Traffic and recorded a hit record with Decca Records in 1969, and ended his career in Nashville with his band “Showboat.” It was Gary’s and his late brother Bill’s wish, to have their ashes scattered together at the same time.

POCAHONTAS - Marie McWilliams Purvis, 89, of Pocahontas, Ark., died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009. She was born March 10, 1920, in Killairn, La., to the late Harvey McWilliams and Mary Maddox McWilliams. Marie was a member of Second Baptist Church in Little Rock, Ark. A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Ball and Henry Purvis; three brothers, H.M. McWilliams, D.C. McWilliams and M.F. McWilliams; and one sister, Stina Burnside. Survivors include one son, Bob Ball and his wife Deb Ball of Maynard, Ark.; one daughter, Karen Ramos and her husband Raymond Ramos of Alexander, Ark.; three sisters, Gusta McWilliams Tice, Katherine McWilliams Mantooth and Shirley McWilliams Parsons; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

SHERIDAN - Homer Larry Worley of Sheridan, Arkansaswas born Sept. 22, 1941 at Little Rock, the son of the late Homer Lloyd Worley and Corine Charlotte Carey Worley Swain. Larry served with the Little Rock Fire Department for 41 years, wherehe retired as Captain. He was a Christian and was of the Baptist faith, had served in the United States Army, was a graduate of U.A.L.R. with a degree in accounting, was a 3rd Degree Mason at Albert Pike Lodge 714, was member of Tar Camp Hunting Club, a member of the Grant County Democratic Committee, and a retired member of Local 34 Chapter of International Firefighters Association. Mr. Worley died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock at the age of 68.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Derryberry Worley of Sheridan; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Sam Treadway of Benton; grandsons,Tyler Brian Treadway and Austin Treadway; sisters-in-law, Jeanette and husband Cary Dunn of Fordyce and Joan Bulloch of Eureka Springs; special nephew, Robert Alan Bulloch and wife Linda of Fayetteville; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Sheridan with Bro. Michael Walton and Bro. Terry Hill officiating. A close friend of the family, Steven Harris, will be singing. Burial will follow at Bryant Cemetery, near Fordyce. Visitation will be Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. CAVE JUNCTION, Oregon - Former Little Rock resident, David Scott Lea, 52, of Cave Junction, Oregon, died at his home on Saturday, October 17, 2009. Family services will be held at a later date. Chapel of the Valley - L.B. Hall Funeral Home ishandling arrangements.
He was born April 23, 1957 in Culver City, California, to Gary and Helen Lea. From 1975 to 1978, he served in the U.S. Army as a motor transportation operator and was stationed in Germany.
After the service, he worked for Fisk/Centel Communications in Little Rock, Arkansas.
In March, 1981, he married Linda Kordsmeier who survives. They moved to Arlington, Texas, where he started and operated his own independent telephone company for seven years. In 1989, they moved to California and then to Cave Junction in 1995. He was diagnosed with diabetes and it took a toll on his life.
He enjoyed fishing, shooting guns and playing with his grandkids.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Spencer Lea, of Cave Junction; one daughter, Amanda Lea, of Cave Junction; two sisters, Terrie McPherson of Selma, Kimberly Norman of San Diego, California; and four grandchildren. His parents, Helen Domby and Gary Lea, both died before him.
